A head for heights and responsibility

Kai Y. (20 years old) is one of seven mechatronics engineers at the Bergisch Gladbach site who ensure that the fully automated high-bay warehouse functions perfectly. For this he has to climb to dizzying heights.

How did you join the KRÜGER GROUP?

First I completed a three-and-a-half-year apprenticeship as a mechatronics engineer at a large paper mill in Bergisch Gladbach. I had already heard many good things about the company from acquaintances who worked at KRÜGER. When there were radical changes at my former company, I applied here and am pleased to have been part of the team since January.

“In my line of work, you must have a head for heights, but the work is very varied, and the colleagues are great.”

What exactly is your job description?

Together with my colleagues, I take care of the maintenance, servicing and repair of the high-bay warehouse. In order to prevent breakdowns, we make daily tours, during which we take a close look at the facility. If something fails here, it quickly has an effect on neighboring production – that’s why we have to work very carefully.

What does this mean in practice?

If, for example, a motor that drives the rollers for the pallet conveyor system breaks down, we have to repair or replace it as quickly as possible. It can also be the case that we have to lend a hand with the shelving system in case it gets stuck somewhere – then we have to go up to a height of 30 meters to fix a fault. Of course, always with helmet and fall protection, but you still need a head for heights to do this kind of work. In addition to mechanical problems, we are also trained to deal with faults in the electronics such as the control system.

And what do you particularly enjoy about your work?

I like how varied the job is. Even though there are various routine tasks, no day is like any other. Added to this is the great deal of responsibility we have. Furthermore, my colleagues are very helpful and friendly. For me, this all fits very well, I feel comfortable and can easily imagine having a professional future here.
